Ensiferum, Lazarus A.D., Blackguard, Mictlantecuhtli, Tormentor
November 17 Galaxy Theatre, Santa Ana, Ca.
On a night that could have been a disaster, due to the fact that both Hypocrisy and Swashbuckle could not make it, due to visa issues (thanks U.S. Homeland Security, that’s sarcasm for those of you who don’t get it), but Metal stood loud and proud. With Ensiferum, Lazarus A.D., Blackguard, Mictlantecuhtli and Tormentor hitting the stage Metal fans were in for a ride. Considering most of the bands were fairly young I figured they would sound like every other new band out today, but the night was rich in Metal history and pride. First was Tormentor, who looked as if they were still in high school, but played Metal with the style of early Exodus, very cool. Also, on the bill was L.A.’s local Black Metal monsters Mictlantecuhtli. Who with face paint and all showed that the dark side of Metal is still alive and as dangerous as always. Next was my new heroes of Metal Lazarus A.D. who still in their early twenties had a strong grasp of what it means to be Metal and song after song they proved they are a band to keep your eye on. Canada’s latest incredible export Blackguard took the stage like they owned it. Blasting the crowd with amazing power and execution. Playing songs from their past and latest Sumerian Records release. Then the band at the head of the table Ensiferum hit’s the stage with their dominant sound that is remnant of the incredible Viking ancestry that they draw their strength and sound from. Reminding the world that they are a true band of dominance. After all was said and done this was a night for Metal to be proud of.

Decimation of the Nation Tour
Featuring Hatebreed, Chimaira, Winds of Plague, Dying Fetus, Toxic Holocaust @
The Glasshouse in , CA

One of the most incredible shows I’ve ever been to. The line up was stacked top to bottom with some of the best Metal/Hardcore bands from the past, present and future. It kicks off with a Toxic Holocaust drum slamming intro into fast heavy classic Thrash mixed with a modern Death Metal sound that got the crowd started and was just a taste of the night to come. Then the masters of Death Metal Dying Fetus take the stage and like most people I was in awe of what I can only explain as taking a class in how to make the most incredible Metal and still having my head spin. It’s just hard to imagine a three piece band that can play music that fast, that technical and that brutal live and not miss a step. And of course they played a personal favorite Justifiable Homicide. Then local band hits big, Winds of Plague explode onto the stage like a madhouse. And the fans show their appreciation with a pit of mayhem. I had just picked up their CD “The Great Stone War” and was excited to get the chance to see them live. Their show was explosive from beginning until they exited the stage. This is definitely a band to watch for the future. Then the co-headliner Chimaira hit’s the stage and was certain the roof wouldn’t hold the energy that had just filled the room. Playing songs from classic Chimaira albums and from their latest “The Infection” keeping the crowd involved, entertained, excited, proving that Chimaira are one of the top bands in their genre. Just when you thought your mind and body couldn’t take anymore, Hatebreed takes the stage with Jamey Jasta standing proud and commanding the crowd like a General to his army. With every lyric, every strum of the guitar, every boom of the drums and every chant, slam, movement of the crowd. It was apparent that Hatebreed’s fans are up for the band whether they’ve been moshing for ten minutes or ten hours. The one thing that I thought was as incredible as the bands themselves is the love and camaraderie between the bands. Every band thanked and spoke incredibly of each other.

In Flames, Between the Buried and Me, 3 Inches of Blood and The Faceless
The Fox in Pomona, Ca

Where were you September 22nd? Because Metal was alive, loud and proud at the Fox in Pomona. The line was packed around the corner to get into this incredible night of great Metal music.
The place is a buzz and then The Faceless like a grenade in your belly. With this monstrous wall of sound that seemed to push you back a few steps and then throw you into a massive slam pit. What a perfect way to start the night. Up next were my new heroes 3 Inches of Blood. The best way to describe them is take the Painkiller era Judas Priest, the Seventh Son era Iron Maiden and either the Peace Sells or So far So Good So What era Megadeth and you have a taste of what 3 inches of Blood is all about. That’s just the kind of band Metal really needs right now. You could really feel the roots of Metal pouring through every song. One of the most dynamic and charismatic bands I’ve heard in a while Between the Buried and Me came out and poured this extremely passionate music onto the crowd. And despite a couple equipment malfunctions that would have had a lot of bands running off stage pouting, Between the Buried and Me didn’t miss a beat.
And then the moment I personally have been waiting ten years for. As the room darkens and the black lights seem to rise above in the back exposing the name In Flames. The eruption from the crowd as Anders Friden and the boys explode onto the stage playing classic In Flames songs like “Clayman” and new favorites (and I must say thank you to them for this) like one of the best songs I’ve heard in the recent years “Disconnected”. Where at that point I nearly lost it a jumped from the balcony. The way they commanded the stage and the audience with music that is very distinctly In Flames. They prove why the are among Metal’s elite and of course Anders had to let the crowd know that he loved them so much that he’s not going to use a condom. After all is said and done this is a night that I will not soon forget and that’s saying something, considering I forget my own name sometimes. course Anders had to let the crowd know that he loved them so much that he’s not going to use a condom. KeeperKev First off, I gotta say the Key Club is a sweet place to see your favorite bands play live. The door guys are there doing just what they are paid to do, unlike some clubs on the strip where they treat metalheads and punks like shit. Security is minimal and slamming/moshing is allowed as long as you don’t get too carried away, even then they will pull you aside and tell you to chill instead of 86ing you. Killer sound system too. OBITUARY/GOATWHORE
Key Club, Hollywood CA.

I got there just in time to catch WARBRINGER starting the night off proper. These thrashers from Ventura Ca. are touring to support the new album ‘Waking Into Nightmares’. They are a young band that is cranking out some really good old school thrash ala Exodus, DBC, Overkill, and Destruction. Warming up a crowd on a Wednesday night is a tough job but Warbringer handled it. They opened with some stuff which I think is from the first album(which I havn’t heard yet), and then tore into some new songs like Living In A Whirlwind, Prey For Death and crowd favorite Jackal. Warbringer kicked ass on this night. If you are into true thrash, check these guys out.
Next up was Austrailia’s The BERZERKER. These gentlemen call their music style industrial death metal. Very fast and heavy stuff. Sort of a hybrid of Napalm Death, Carcass, Ministry and Deicide. I hadn’t heard of this band before tonight so I didn’t know any the songs, but they blasted thru their set with violent precision and the pit raged the whole time. The Berzerker has a very extreme style with grinding guitar and bass, blast beat drumming and some mean death/grind vocals. Check out the video on their myspace page to see what I mean.
From Brazil came three-piece death metal outfit KRISIUN. This band calls Brazil home but they pretty much live on the road, touring constantly with bands such as Nile, Grave, Morbid Angel, Destruction and Rotting Christ. They play brutal, uncompromising death metal in that well known Brazilian style. And as is common among the South American metal bands, Krisiun took every opportunity to thank the crowd for coming out, supporting the scene, keeping metal alive and gave cheers to the other bands on the bill. I was obvious that these guys really love what they do as they lead us through a blistering set of older tunes(They have quit a few) and some material from the new album Southern Storm. I missed the last couple of songs as I was trying to hunt down they guys from Goatwhore for an interview before they went on stage.
Up next was GOATWHORE. I have been waiting a long time to see these guys. I am a big fan of Acid Bath and Soilent Green(both bands that Goatwhore is or has been involved with) so you know I’ve got all their albums. First they hit us with a couple of songs off the new album Carving Out The Eyes Of God. Brutal stuff man, these Louisiana boys crank out some of the meanest black/death metal around. We were treated to a wicked set of songs mostly from ‘Carving’ and the last album ‘A Haunting Curse’. The pit was getting nasty by now and it was impossible to just stand there and watch. Goatwhore put on a sick show and it was amazing that they sound so heavy with just one guitar. It was good to see all the youngsters that showed up to rage in support of these great bands. I mean, sure there are kids that like some metal, maybe even buy a album or two(mostly because they saw a ‘popular’ band wearing some t-shirt) but these kids are hardcore, true headbanging thrashers. I rarely see these kids out in the world but they manage to find their way to these shows and this gives me hope that at least some of the youth aren’t just listening to the crap they are fed on radio and tv. But I ramble.
The lights dimmed as the mighty Obituary took the stage one by one. People in the crowd were already screaming for ‘Slowly We Rot’, ‘Body Bag’ and “Chopped In Half’. If you’re not familiar with Obituary, they come from the spawning ground of American death metal, Tampa, Florida, and have been around for quite a while. They’ve concocted a very distinct sound. While other bands were battling over who was the fastest and most satanic, Obituary slowed things down to a scary almost sludgy pace, and tuned their guitars down, making them one of the heaviest bands of the early death metal scene. Vocalist John Tardy has a sick, primordial growl that is unmistakable. These guys also just put out a new album in June.
We were assaulted with songs from the new album Darkest Day as well as classics like Evil Ways, Final Thoughts, and Body Bag. Still they screamed for Slowly We Rot. By now the pit was pure hell, even a few chicks were in there terrorizing. And although there is a big sign on the side of the stage that says “NO STAGE DIVING” There was stage diving.
At last it was over. The lights came on and the band left the stage, leaving us with a wall of feedback, people were getting ready to go home. But being a seasoned concert goer I know what that means…..ENCORE!!! The crowd started to chant for the band. Drummer Don Tardy strolls out to his set and proceeds to pound out a metal version of John Bonham’s drum solo ‘Moby Dick’. Then guitarist Ralph Santolla jumped in for a quick solo and finally, to the crowds delight(especially the kid to my right) Slowly….We…Rot! After that and a couple more we were turned out to the strip to go our separate ways.
Over all it was a great show, event though it was a Wednesday and I had to be at work in four hours, I’m glad I got the chance to see this tour. Oh and you should have seen the look I got when I walked passed the kooks at the Roxy and a guy asked me who just played at the Key Club, I said Obituary and Goatwhore.
Undying Darkness/Xeroderma
Nov.16th -The Masquerade, Atlanta Ga
The show started at 6pm and Hate Eternal stormed the stage opening the show
with the track “Bringer of Storms” from there new album "Fury & Flames".
The pit exploded into a fury of moshing and destruction after a short 25 minutes, Hate Eternal exited the stage with the classic King of Kings.
Total fucking death metal.
Born of Osiris played to a crowd laying down there brand of death core. A mix of bleeding through and "As blood Runs Black" , But with an added keyboard spot..I'm not totally sure how they fit into this tour, But it was nice to see a variety of bands.
Unearthed played next with there brutal hardcore approach
Playing songs from there past release and new one "The March"
The crowd responded in force with a packed house mashing
And crowd surfing a great addition to the tour considering
The headliners "HateBreed".
Heading downstairs in-between Hate Eternal and born of Osiris
To check out the local band "Undying Darkness" who I’ve had the pleasure of previously witnessing 3 times before tonight's concert.
They laid down their skillfully executed brutal death metal with calculated head banging and break downs
Bone crushing speed fills their front man Anthony got the crowd going into a major
Pit with his calls for blood from the stage, again after 25 minutes of intense death metal
Undying darkness called it a night.
Heading back upstairs after the onslaught of Undying Darkness to witness the
God fathers of Death metal "Cannibal Corpse". The band came out head banging
and blasting out the new song "Evisceration Plague" to a packed house
Another highlight was them playing the title track off the album the" Wretched Spawn" driving the show into overdrive. There was a major pit and crowd surfing and stage diving during there entire set.
Closing the show with the classic crowd pleaser "Hammer Smashed Face" after
Inducing the crowd into a total frenzy playing "Stripped, Raped and Strangled"!
They also played "I cum blood" to great crowd response, so many classics and new favorites.
So much head banging a great show.
Back downstairs to the purgatory stage ..You got to love going to Atlanta's Masquerade , not only do you get to witness great bands on three levels of the club, you also get a great cardio work out .. In between Cannibal Corpse and Hatebreed
was the local Black metal band "Xeroderma", who laid down there own brand of blackened death metal
for 25 minutes to a tiny but crowded purgatory stage.
A good lesson in evil and blast beats.
Closing the show to a packed to the walls house, was Hatebreed.
Playing tracks from there new album “Hatebreed” and a good part of their previous recordings.
As alwaysHatebreed launches the audience into an assult of pit moshing maniacs.
A diverse show at the masquerade in Atlanta ga the turn out was packed with fans
From all genres represented tonight tons of head banging and moshing that shows
The scene is still alive for death metal and hardcore and a new scene is arising for the
Next generation of bands like born of Osiris. A good night for the fans.
